Is There a Problem with the Sunroof Shattering in the 2020 Toyota Camry?

2020 Toyota Camry sunroofs have a tendency to explode and shatter. There is no obvious cause, and complaints generally state that it happens for no apparent reason.

Complaints on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website and Toyota forums tell the story. There is no feedback from Toyota, and complainants typically state that the manufacturer doesn’t deem this problem to be a warranty claim.

What Problems are Toyota Camry Owners Experiencing with Sunroofs?

There is one major problem that 2020 Toyota Camry owners have with sunroofs. They explode and the glass shatters! As one member of a Toyota forum states:

“Apparently exploding sunroofs is a real thing.”

His wife was driving their Camry on the interstate when the sunroof shattered. They immediately thought that “someone had dropped something off an overpass.” But that isn’t what had happened. The sunroof glass had “shattered with a good sized hole in the middle.” But they could see from the upward orientation of the glass that nothing had hit it.

His advice is “to keep the shade closed on the sunroof when you’re driving.” He says that a “quick Google search will tell you all about it.” He also believes that Japanese vehicles are more prone to this problem.

“Luckily my insurance paid for it. I just wanted to make everyone aware of this phenomenon.”

Here’s what 2020 Toyota Camry owners told the NHTSA.

An owner from New York states:

“I was driving down the road and heard a loud explosion. It sounded like it came from the moonroof. I opened the sunshade and saw that the entire front section of the panoramic moonroof had exploded for no apparent reason.”

At the time, the temperature was about 48°F, and it was overcast. There weren’t any vehicles, trees, or bridges in front of the vehicle. There was no “flying debris.” The Camry was only six months old, with 6,500 miles on the clock.

“I went to the nearest auto store and bought duct tape to secure the remaining glass and then drove to the nearest Toyota dealer.”

We don’t know the outcome.

An owner from Louisiana states:

“I was driving down the interstate when I heard a loud gunshot sound.” Then glass rained down on the car and into it. The sunroof had “exploded out of nowhere.”

The complaint continues: “This could have caused me to wreck because I shut my eyes and swerved.” As a result, this owner was grateful that their daughter wasn’t in the back seat of the vehicle because “she could have been seriously injured.”

Another owner describes an experience in Maryland:

“While driving with my sunroof exterior flat glass and interior door assembly both completely closed, my daughter and I suddenly heard a boom explosion.” They saw huge black chunks flying behind the car. These, they discovered later, were bits of broken sunroof that was flying in the air, hitting vehicles traveling behind them. It was only then that they pulled over and discovered that the sunroof had exploded.

To their surprise, “instead of the remaining broken sunroof glass edges exhibiting a concave downward appearance, the remaining shatter glass exhibited a convex outward appearance.” This, they believe, showed that there had been an explosion. But, because he hadn’t bought the vehicle in Maryland, the dealer said they couldn’t help. So, they claimed original equipment manufacturer (OEM) glass from auto insurance. This had a $500 deductible.

A few days after getting home, the owner states that “the new OEM glass and sunroof assembly began to screech and crackle as if it was coming apart.”

The dealership where they had bought the Camry had said they would “make my sunroof assembly new again at no cost since the vehicle was still under warranty.” But they apparently reneged on the “promise.”

Ultimately, this owner is afraid that the sunroof will explode again. “The purchasing dealership failed to comply with my auto sunroof glass and assembly that was still under warranty and refund my auto insurer and me as they had promised.”
