It stands to reason that if the sunroof of any vehicle shatters spontaneously, there must be a problem. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), the company that manufactures the RAM 1500, hasn’t acknowledged that there is a problem, but owners maintain that there is.
There are multiple complaints on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website and on RAM forums. Most state that they hear a loud explosion and then discover that the sunroof of their RAM 1500 has shattered.
2020 RAM 1500 owners are finding that their sunroofs shatter suddenly, with no warning and no impact from external objects.
Here are some of the complaints and comments from RAM 1500 owners who have experienced exploding and shattering sunroofs.
The first complaint to the NHTSA was from an Oklahoma resident in November 2020.
“Sunroof exploded while driving on an interstate. There were other cars around, but (the) vehicle directly in front of me was not close. There was not any sound like something striking the vehicle. It sounded more like a shotgun blast and then broken glass and wind noise sounds.
“The vehicle is equipped with a panoramic sunroof, but only the sliding portion is busted.”
A month later, an owner from California complained to the NHTSA.
“Sunroof exploded! Driving on (the) freeway we heard (a) loud blast and then the glass was gone!“ There were no other cars around and no overpass for miles. But, the “glass blew up” and was gone, like a volcano, he said. “We had to drive 30 min in the rain home. Dealer currently says no warranty?”
An owner from Texas states, quite simply: “Sunroof exploded into pieces while driving. With a shotgun sounds. No outside impact on the pieces of the sunroof.”
In December 2021 a forum member posted on 5thGenRams Forums. He owns a 2020 RAM 1500 5.7L.
“Was driving 60 mph on the highway. Nobody in front of me. Explosion sound. Pulled off and saw this… Cleared the glass and found no rocks or anything that could have caused it to break. Just wanted to add that it happened to me too.”
He was responding to earlier posts. This one is from August 2020:
“While I was driving from work, I heard a loud explosion that sounded like a tire blowout. There was no car in front of me and I was driving in an open area. I was driving around 35-40 MPH and the temperature was in the low 90s. I didn’t know what had happened, but I heard a wind noise from above (the sunroof cover was closed).
When he opened the cover, he saw that the front portion of the sunroof shattered. “There was no tree or rock that struck the sunroof. He immediately took it to the RAM dealership. He wanted to “make sure that it’s covered under warranty, because dealerships have a tendency to say that it was a rock that caused it. The dealership did cover it under warranty.”
Clearly, this owner is aware that others have zero success claiming on warranty. Here is his advice:
“Hopefully, this doesn’t happen to anyone, but if it does, contact Ram Care immediately. Send photos to them and tell them of your incident. Ram Care helped me with my situation, advising me that the glass was ordered. When it arrived, (they) contacted the dealership about the repairs.”
He also suggests that RAM 1500 owners Google “panoramic sunroofs being shattered, the type of glass (tempered glass) being shattered, and how often it happens. All of the shattered sunroofs look the same, like a volcano that erupted. An article by a glass expert stated that it’s virtually impossible for (a) sunroof to be hit by a rock. It would have to come from directly above. Don’t let the dealerships con you. Hopefully this helped.”
