2022 Hyundai Veloster Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Lane departure and powertrain issues are the top complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

The 2022 Hyundai Veloster is a funky hatchback that has drawn a lot of attention. But demand has dropped, and only the high-performance N version is available for 2022. Nicknamed the Corner Rascal by the automaker because of its “incredible cornering ability,” it’s a carry-over. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that complaint issues about the 2021 model are being carried over as well. The primary issue is that the blind spot monitoring system malfunctions and dealers don’t have a fix.

Most Common Problems

Confusingly, even though there is only a 2022 Veloster N, which is a carry-over model from 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has two separate files for complaints. One is labeled the 2022 Hyundai Veloster N, and the other is simply the 2022 Hyundai Veloster.

Hyundai announced its decision in its summary of changes to the Hyundai lineup for the 2022 model year. This states that the “Veloster 2.0, 2.0 Premium, R-Spec, Turbo, and Ultimate” are all “Discontinued due to (an) expanded SUV lineup that includes (the) Venue and Kona. (The) Veloster N model remains available.”

Nevertheless, the complaints included in both NHTSA files tell the same story. There is a major problem with the blind spot monitoring system. This is the same problem reported by owners of the 2021 Hyundai Veloster as you can see from our post about this model. We also dedicated another post to blind spot detection system issues with the 2022 Veloster, which contains additional complaints.

There is also a powertrain problem that has been highlighted relating to the dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

Additionally, Hyundai has recalled 56,148 vehicles, including the 2021-2022 Veloster N for another powertrain problem. NHTSA Campaign Number 22V746000 states that the issue is that the “fail-safe” limited-mobility drive mode may be impaired. This is caused “by a transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power.” And, of course, as the recall notification points out, a loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Problems with the Lane Departure System

Today’s modern safety systems are designed to protect drivers. Hyundai describes its blind spot detection safety feature as “another set of eyes.” The way it works (when it does work) is that the system watches where you can’t. It picks up blind spots, for example:

  • The area just to the side of your car that isn’t covered by your mirrors
  • The area that is obscured by the pillar between the front and back seat of your vehicle when you turn your head

The system is designed to track vehicles that approach alongside your Veloster N or from behind. If you indicate you’re changing lanes, the system will warn you with a flashing light, warning sound, a vibration, or a light shake of the steering wheel.

Complaints report that the system triggers for no reason. Most state that this malfunction is related to a change in tires and many report that dealers say there isn’t a fix.

What Happens When Blind Spot Detection Doesn’t Work?

“While driving, the blindspot monitor will randomly go off even if there is no car in my blind spot. And it will sometimes not go off when there is a car driving in my blindspot. I took the car to the dealership to fix the issue. After waiting for weeks to get my car back, my local Hyundai dealership was unable to fix it and I was told there would be a recall for it eventually.” That was in August 2022 and there still isn’t a recall.

A 2022 Veloster N owner from Missouri states that “the blind spot detector is malfunctioning. The light is on even when there is no car present. I’ve talked with several others who have the same make/model car and they’re all having the same issues.”

Is the Problem Related to a Change in Tires?

An owner from Washington states that the blind spot monitoring system “gives multiple false warnings on both (the) passenger and driver side.” This started happening after replacing wheels and tires from the original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) specifications. The problem is that because this owner lives in a colder environment, the OEM ultra high-performance Pirelli P zero tires started to crack. The “issue is only resolved when OEM tires and wheels are placed on the car,” the complaint states.

A similar complaint from an owner in North Carolina states that both the left and right side blind spot indicators illuminate unnecessarily. This causes “undue concern while trying to change lanes as the car alerts to a potential collision when there is no hazard.” The problem is very intermittent, the complaint says and seems to have something to do with the tires. The issue started after switching from the factory Pirelli P Zero tires to 4 Michelin Pilot Sport all-season (A/S) tires.

“This is especially problematic because Hyundai has decided to ship this model vehicle with summer performance tires that are unsafe to drive in temperatures under 50° F all 12 months of the year. So, there are numerous customers who have needed to switch tires for safety, and then had their BSM (blind spot monitoring) system malfunction.”

“After changing from stock summer tires to all-season tires; the Blind Spot Monitoring system malfunctioned and no longer works. There is no dealer fix for this problem.”

An owner from Georgia says the same thing. “After changing to tires (Michelin Pilot Sport all-season) that can handle lower temperatures than the Pirelli PZero, the BSM system is now giving false alerts, and is unreliable.”

Powertrain Problems

The owner of a 2022 Veloster N reports a recurring DCT failure. The complaint states that the transmission “failed to shift out of first gear.” Then the “engine over rev light came on, white, yellow, RED – 7000 RPM!” So, the driver “Got it off the road.” This happened 3 times on a 50-mile trip. After getting the car towed to a dealer, they said they couldn’t duplicate the problem and the car wasn’t showing any codes. “They would not do any work on it without a TSB from Hyundai. This is dangerous. It drove okay for a week or two then on Thursday, August 25 (2022) it did it again. Somebody is going to get hurt with this thing.”
